Pour la version française voir Savants inscrits sur la Tour Eiffel
On the Eiffel Tower, seventy-two names of French scientists, engineers, and mathematicians are engraved in recognition of their contributions. The engravings are found on the sides of the tower under the first balcony, in letters about 60 cm high, and originally painted in gold.
It is not clear how the 72 names were chosen, but it is known that some were rejected because their name was too long (the maximum is 12 characters). There are no women on the list. Of the 72 men so honored, only Michel-Eugène Chevreul and Hippolyte Fizeau were alive at the time of the opening of the Eiffel Tower on 31 March 1889. Chevreul died about a week later, at the age of 102, leaving only Fizeau alive for the associated World's Fair later that year.
